Has anybody ever mentioned out of network therapy to you (whether it be physical therapy, occupational therapy or mental health therapy?) Here is a little more information on why paying “cash” or “out of network” may be the best option for your optimal health and meeting your goals.
1. More One-on-One Time with Your Therapist
In-network clinics are often driven by insurance reimbursement. Insurance doesn’t reimburse well for physical therapy, so if the therapist isn’t seeing a lot of patients, they aren’t getting paid well by the insurance company. Therefore, your therapist may be rewarded for billing more units or seeing more patients for a shorter period of time. They also may be seeing two or more patients at the same time or using an assistant or aide for the treatment.
Out of network physical therapy clinics operate differently. At Release Physical Therapy, you are paying for 55 minutes of one on one attention. That one-on-one focus allows for a thorough evaluation and assessment, more effective treatment, and better individualized care.
2. Fewer Visits for success
Because your Release PTs have more time to address the root cause of your issue—not just your symptoms—patients often improve in fewer visits. While insurance might cover 12 visits, you may only need 4–6 with a skilled out-of-network provider.
3. No Insurance Restrictions = More Freedom
Insurance companies often dictate what treatments are covered, how long you can be treated, or even what body part can be addressed per visit. With out of network PT, you and your therapist decide how to proceed with treatment together. You can choose to work on return to daily activities, return to sport or generalized pain or strengthening.
4. Performance & Prevention, Not Just Rehab
Most insurance-based clinics focus only on pain and pathology. But what if you want to run your first marathon, get back to CrossFit, or improve posture after years at a desk? Insurance likely won’t pay for that—but a cash-based therapist can guide you through it. What is even crazier is some insurance companies will not cover return to sport physical therapy (i.e getting back to soccer after an ACL repair) even if the injury occurred on the field. Out of network PT supports getting you back to your goals no matter what they are, pain, sport, strength or generalized fitness.
5. Some insurance companies reimburse even for out of network physical therapy
Although Release Physical Therapy has a fixed up front price for physical therapy, you can check with your insurance provider to see if they cover out of network therapy, and sometimes you can even get reimbursement for your treatment with us. We even help you by sending the claims to your insurance provider for your physical therapy treatment, or sending you itemized superbills that you can send to your insurance company.
6. Long-Term Health, Not Short-Term Fixes
Physical therapy is about more than getting out of pain. It’s about learning how your body works, moving with confidence, and building resilience. Out of network PT often includes education, movement retraining, and holistic care that extends far beyond a traditional PT model.
